About Evangeline

Evangeline Records Ltd.

There's no doubt, since the dawn of the new millennium, that the global record industry has undergone some massive changes. With the major sector consisting of ever-more corporate outfits, the gulf between them and the independent sector grows wider by the day. Running an independent record company is a tougher call than ever, and if you're going to do it, you have to have an edge, and a strongly-established brand identity. Evangeline Records is a North London based independent label that fits the bill; in the last few years, Evangeline has carefully nurtured a reputation as an outfit that works effectively within the still fertile reissues market, as well as releasing new albums by established artists who have dropped off the major radar, yet still make vital music for a discerning audience. This reputation for proud independence is founded on releases by artists who share much of the label's desire to make music that is free from compromise and ignores ephemeral trends, but does not lack commercial viability. These artists include the likes of Hammell On Trial, Spooky Tooth, Tom Ovans, Govt Mule, Dickey Betts, Blue Cheer, Bootsy Collins, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), whilst the label's reissue division has recently made available archive releases by performers as diverse as Cheap Trick, Robert Gordon,Flo n Eddie,Spirit and Charlie Daniels.

The underlying core values that inform Evangeline's approach is the presentation of music with a genuine enduring quality and distinction, reflected in quality packaging and sourcing of original recordings, informative sleeve notes and a general care and appreciation of the product. These aspects have been highlighted in positive press reviews and radio support for Evangeline releases.

Evangeline is helmed by Pete Macklin, whose decades-long experience within the UK record industry includes a lengthy stint as director of Demon Records, alongside Elvis Costello and Jake Riviera during its heyday as one of the country's leading independent labels in the 80s and 90s., backed up by John Whyton, who began his career way back with the legendary Stiff Records and after turning off the lights, decamped to Virgin by way of Circa.
